Interspersed with classroom hours, the folks at SCAD Atlanta did a fantastic job of giving us opportunities to see some of what Atlanta has to offer. We toured the SCAD Atlanta facilities (and were lucky enough to catch the last day of the SCADpad installation), Atlanta Botanical Gardens, and The High Museum (that's where we are in the pic). A photo I snapped on the last day was used in SCAD picture story they just published about their summer programs!
The car was packed and ready for me to hit the road as soon as school let out on Thursday, June 16th. I was off to Atlanta to participate in an AP Summer Institute at SCAD Atlanta. I spent the week (June 22-27) with 16 other art educators learning the ins-and-outs of teaching AP Studio Art. Our intrepid leader, art educator and artist, Kevin Cole, has been teaching AP art - with a near 100% pass rate - for over 10 years. The format of the class was practical with a distinct emphasis on having us ready to hit the ground running when school starts! We thoroughly studied material from all three AP Studio Art Portfolios (2-D Design, Drawing and 3-D), looked at countless student portfolios (Kevin is a reader for AP Portfolios so talk about valuable insight!), and had to opportunity to glean college-level foundation lessons from SCAD professors (along with sample images). Best of all was the honest sharing and contributing by all of the teachers present. Besides Kevin, several of the other teachers were already teaching AP Studio Art and their additions to our discussions were invaluable.
